This surgery aims to remove abdominal fat and/or skin tissues that do not respond to exercise or diet. The best results are achieved by those patients that are in good shape but want to remodel their abdomen after a period of dieting or even after a pregnancy. The surgery is performed through an incision just above the pubic area. Through this incision, the surgeon is able to tight the underlying muscle and remove excess skin and fat tissues. The length of the incision will depend upon the amount of tissue to be trimmed away. The surgery is performed at a hospital and usually a perydural anesthesia is used. When you wake up, you will be wearing elastic bandage and although it will be a little difficult for you to stand straight at first, you will be encouraged to get up. Any discomfort can be controlled by medication. Within the first week or so, the stitches will be removed and you will return to no strenuous activities. You will feel numbness at the surgery area but this feeling will disappear in a few months. The incision line will fade until just a narrow scar will be visible. As a permanent procedure, the surgery of the abdomen will give you a firmer, flatter abdomen for many years as long as you do not gain extra weight.
